| National Accounts |
| 1) What is the difference between GDP and GNP? |
| Answer: GDP-Gross Domestic Product -is the net value of goods and services produced by resident producer units (before deduction of provisions for consumption of fixed capital). This value is equal to the sum of revenue that is distributed by the resident producer units. GNP-Gross National Product - was published according to the guidelines of the previous system of national accounts (SNA 68). In the new system of national accounts (SNA-93), the GNP is called "Gross National Income",the equivalent of the GDP plus income paid to Israeli units operating abroad, and less payments to foreign units operating in Israel. |

| 2) Why don't the components of the product in 1995 prices after chaining add up to the total product? |
| Answer: The national accounts were originally calculated for each year at current prices and at the prices of the previous year. That is, the data for 1996 were calculated at 1996 prices and at 1995 prices; the data for 1997 were calculated at 1997 prices and at 1996 prices. The quantitative changes in 1997 compared with 1996 were obtained by calculating the ratio of 1997 data at 1996 prices to 1996 data at 1996 prices. Data were chained at 1995 prices using the quantitative changes. . For example, a figure for 1997 at 1995 prices after chaining equals the 1996 figure at 1995 prices times the ratio of 1997 data to 1996 data at 1996 prices. Chaining was carried out for each series separately. The weighted components at 1996 prices are different from the weighted components at 1995 prices because the weight of the components in the total changes from year to year.
Therefore, the sum of the components of the product in 1995 prices after chaining is different from the sum of the product series in 1996 prices after chaining. |

| 3) What is the difference between per capita product in dollars and per capita product in PPP terms? |
| Answer: The per capita GDP in dollars is calculated on the basis of the regular exchange rate. The exchange rates for different currencies are sometimes set administratively and sometimes through intervention of the main banks in the foreign currency market, and they do not reflect the real price ratios between the various countries. Even if the exchange rates are set in the market without any intervention, they are mainly related to trade flows and international capital transactions. That is, exchange rates do not express the price ratios of some of the product components that are non-tradable or whose tradability is low, such as public services, buildings, roads, and other infrastructure work. Price differences between countries may be large for products that are not traded. Therefore, per-capita product prices in dollars in various countries, which are calculated at regular currency exchange rates, cannot be compared. Special exchange rates such as PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) can be used to deduct the differences in price levels between countries. For a given sum of money that is exchanged on the basis of PPP, it is possible to purchase an identical basket of goods and services in every country. Thus, the GDP in the various countries that is obtained on the basis of PPP is calculated at fixed prices. In that way, it is possible to compare the amount of goods and services in different countries. |
